  31. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS DRIVER AND PREVIOUS VERSIONS

  33. If you are updating from a previous version of the
  34. HP DeskJet Series Printer Driver, You should be aware
  35. of the following differences between this driver and
  36. previous versions:
  37.  
  38.   o Automatic color printing.
  39.   o Printer dialog boxes have been redesigned.
  40.   o Intellifont fonts are no longer supported.
  41.   o Print regions are different from previous versions
  42.   o This driver does not work with Microsoft Windows 3.0

  44. Automatic color printing
  45. ------------------------
  46. The HP DeskJet 500 Series printer driver uses
  47. HP's ColorSmart technology to select the best printer
  48. settings for your documents when using HP DeskJet color
  49. printer models. ColorSmart analyzes your document and
  50. automatically selects the halftoning, intensity, and
  51. color control settings to provide the best quality
  52. printout of your document. ColorSmart is enabled when
  53. you select Automatic Printout mode in the
  54. Printer Setup dialog box.
  55.  
  56. Intellifont fonts
  57. -----------------
  58. Previous versions of this driver included three
  59. Intellifont typefaces. This version of the printer
  60. driver does not support use of Intellifont fonts.
  61. The equivalent typefaces in style can be obtained
  62. by using the following scalable TrueType typefaces
  63. provided with windows 3.1:
  64.

  71. If you have existing documents formatted using
  72. Intellifont fonts, the Windows operating system
  73. will substitute equivalent TrueType fonts. This
  74. may require minor reformatting for some existing
  75. documents.

  77. Print regions are different
  78. ---------------------------
  79. The minimum margins using the HP DeskJet 500 Series driver
  80. is 0.33 in. top and 0.67  in. bottom margins for all
  81. printing modes. See the "Troubleshooting" section of
  82. this README file for more information.

  84. This driver does not work with Microsoft Windows 3.0
  85. ----------------------------------------------------
  86. The HP DeskJet 500 Series printer driver, Version 4.0,
  87. does not support Microsoft Windows 3.0 or earlier
  88. versions. Before installing this driver, you must
  89. upgrade to Microsoft Windows 3.1.

  91. NOTE: If you do install the driver in Windows 3.0 or
  92.       earlier versions through the Control Panel and
  93.       attempt to use the driver, an error message will
  94.       warn you that the driver will not run with that
  95.       version of Windows. You will have to reinstall a
  96.       previous version of the driver over the new
  97.       driver in order to use your printer.

  99. INSTALLING THROUGH THE CONTROL PANEL
  100. ------------------------------------
  101. HP does not recommend installing the driver through the
  102. Control Panel. this may result in incomplete installation.
  103. If you have already installed your driver through the
  104. Control Panel and are experiencing driver problems,
  105. reinstall the driver using the HPSETUP.EXE program.
  106.  
  107. REINSTALLING THE DRIVER AFTER REINSTALLING WINDOWS 3.1
  108. ------------------------------------------------------
  109. If you reinstall Microsoft Windows 3.1 after installing
  110. the printer driver, reinstall the printer driver to
  111. ensure correct printer operation.
  112.  
  113. Reinstalling a Previous Version of the Printer Driver
  114. -----------------------------------------------------
  115. When installing the HP DeskJet 500 Series printer driver,
  116. the HPSETUP program enters a line in the [spooler] section
  117. of WIN.INI. This line must be removed in order for an older
  118. version of the HP DeskJet Series printer driver to work
  119. correctly. Using an ASCII text editor such as NOTEPAD or
  120. another editing program on your Computer, remove the
  121. indicated line in the spooler section of the WIN.INI:
  122.  
  123. NOTE: Be sure to make a backup copy of your WIN.INI
  124.       file before editing in case you make an error
  125.       while editing.

  136. 2. TROUBLESHOOTING
  137. ===============================================================

  139. BANDING PROBLEMS
  140. ----------------
  141. When printing solid fills, Browns or other darker colors
  142. may show banding. If this problem occurs, try printing in
  143. Presentation Print Quality mode or Color Photo
  144. Printout mode.
  145.  
  146. CROSSHATCHED FILLS AND PATTERNS DO NOT PRINT
  147. --------------------------------------------
  148. For many applications, printing crosshatching is not
  149. supported in some printer modes. If you are having
  150. problems printing crosshatching, try using Color Graphics
  151. Printout mode with Pattern Halftoning or Black Text
  152. Printout mode.

  154. Driver will not install to an Omnibook
  155. --------------------------------------
  156. Omnibooks have a subset of Microsoft Windows. Windows
  157. on Omnibooks do not have the file LZEXPAND.DLL in the
  158. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. This file is required for
  159. driver installation and is included in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  160. directory on most desktop and laptop systems using
  161. Microsoft Windows 3.1. Obtain a copy of the file and
  162. put it in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory of your Omnibook
  163. before installing the printer driver.

  165. ENVELOPES DO NOT PRINT CORRECTLY
  166. --------------------------------
  167. Some applications print envelopes in the wrong orientation.
  168. If you have problems, see the APPLICATION NOTES section
  169. of this README file for solutions.

  171. FORMATTING PROBLEMS WITH PRINT REGIONS AND MARGINS
  172. --------------------------------------------------
  173. The minimum margins using the HP DeskJet 500 Series
  174. printer driver is 0.33 in. top and 0.67 in. bottom margins
  175. for all printing modes. Previous versions of this
  176. printer driver had minimum margins of 0.5 in. for both
  177. top and bottom margins. You may need to reformat
  178. documents created for previous versions of this driver
  179. or restore the printer margins to the settings used in
  180. previous versions of this driver.
  181.  
  182. To use the same print region as previous versions of the
  183. HP DeskJet Series printer drivers, check the
  184. "Print Region" check box in the INI Configuration
  185. program. For instructions on using the INI Configuration
  186. program, see the section on INI file modification
  187. in this README file.

  189. NOTE: With this change, text on printed pages
  190.       containing color will be shifted up from
  191.       what you see on your screen.
  192.  
  193. The printable area on a page using the HP DeskJet 500 Series
  194. printer driver differs from the printable area allowed
  195. by DOS applications.
  196.  
  197. Printer is ready, but nothing is printing
  198. -----------------------------------------
  199. The HP DeskJet 500 Series printer driver has an enhanced
  200. error detection mode that detects printer error states
  201. such as out of paper or wrong print cartridge installed.
  202. This mode is only available when the printer is connected
  203. directly to your computer (not a network) with a
  204. Centronics parallel or RS-232-C serial cable.
